Although the use of caricaturized stereotyping is a somewhat painfull reoccuring theme in his work, on this occasion the part he played in his own installation piece [‘pain cake’- youtube it] could be considered successful on only a few levels. One of these being that he was able to show how far removed those in the room laughing and smiling are from what he may have been trying to show. ie. the lack of proper attention; and perhaps in some respects, reaction to a live, hands on female genital mutilation of sorts.
Add this to the trend of people who seem to show contempt for the fact that without his title of artist, he is basically just a man who doesn’t care give two shits about female genital mutilation and you have at this point what would seem to be a sub level international media fracas.
There will be comments in support and against his choice of audience and his piece. However without an interview to clarify or make excuses including the chance to address the context of his installation we could be rightly accused of demonising him
But even as I make this argument, the flaws in what he set out to achieve stick out too sorely to ignore.
If there is truth to what he said regarding the Swedish minister, then she sure was right… how things will change for him.
some people are so close minded that in the process of trying to ‘open’ their minds you could be regarded as being close minded yourself… it doesnt mean you shouldnt try though
I love ATTACK THE BLOCK, so I made this piece “Moses vs The Monsters”. Enjoy.
